St Mark's Church of England Primary School

A family working and growing together to reach our potential.

PE

It is our intention at St Mark’s to develop a broad curriculum that enables children to acquire knowledge, skills and vocabulary in a broad range of sporting activities as well as develop values and transferrable life skills. The School Games values – Passion, Self-Belief, Respect, Honesty, Determination and Teamwork – are central to what we are aiming to embody and epitomise within our school. We strive to provide high-quality PE lessons that inspire all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. Alongside this we encourage children to be physically active for sustained periods of time and educate them to lead healthy lives. We have a rich history of sporting success as a school and many of our pupils compete at an elite level however we are committed to giving each and every child the opportunities to maximise their potential and achieve their own personal goals. By the end of their St Mark’s journey children will have worked through a progressive skillsbased curriculum:

  • They will develop and explore physical skills with increasing control and coordination.
  • They will learn to work and play with others in a range of group situations.
  • They will perform skills and apply rules to different activities.
  • They are taught to improve the quality and control of their performance.
  • Their enjoyment of physical activity is cultivated through creativity and imagination.
  • They will develop and understanding of how to succeed in a range of physical activities and how to evaluate their own success.

Our inclusive approach recognises not only the importance of developing physical skills within PE but also the contribution that sport plays in the mental well-being of pupils.
